First synchronisation

I have copied a hard drive at my office onto an external drive and brought it home. I want to synchronise the files over a VPN between home and the office.
The compare process window shows minuses alongside the files on the external drive and pluses alongside the files on the hard drive my office.
It seems I have to overwrite all files on the external drive with the files from the office hard drive, to get them recognised as being the same.
This would take forever over the VPN.
Is there a way to avoid having to do this and still setting up the synchronisation?

How comes the timestamps are all different? Are the two PCs on different time zones?
