VV Pro 2 hanging on comparison

I have used VV Pro 2 for many years and it has done great service. I've hit a problem today.

When I run the compare the comparison sits at 0 files - the animation on the dialog box shows the magnifyer moving over the folders and the elapsed time still counts up.

As you can see from this dialog box - leaving it running for 4hrs and it is still at 0.

Hitting cancel on the compare process doesn't cancel it. VV then has to be killed using the task manager.

I have run chkdsk on the disk d:\ and it found no errors.
I can access all the files on the disk with no errors

Running a profile that backs up a different disk works ok.

Any suggestions as to what I should be looking at.

This gets stranger. Changing the order of the disks in profile and it hangs on whichever disk is first - even if it was the disk that worked in another profile.

Eventually I opened the .fsf file in notepad and resaved in notepad under a new name - making absolutely NO CHANGES to the content. And now it works.

I'd be tempted to say corrupt .fsf file - except for the fact that I had been making minor changes via VV to see if those solved the problem and resaving the profile. So the .fsf file had been rewritten by VV a couple of time and that didn't solve it.

Anyhow, it now appears to be working, but I am wondering about what caused it to stop working in the first place!

Maybe caused by a corruption that ViceVersa did not fix by re-saving the profile? Never had such an error before....
