Hi,

I have been comparing 2 similar products for a few weeks now - Vice Versa Pro and SFFS. At the end of the day they do very similar things but the 2/3 things that are pushing me away from VVP are:

-> No FTP support. Some of my most "useful" data I like to backup to my FTP site so that if I am at any other site and I don't have my USB drive/pen then I can still get at much of it (common drivers, utils, favourites, Roboform Passcards etc).
-> Native Scheduler. I don't like relying on the windows built in scheduler - I have always found it flakey and hard to get decent feedback - maybe a service of some form.
-> Finally - some form of indication in the system tray to tell me that a sync/copy is performing and some form of visual notification if something has not backed up for some reason.

I would seriously take a look at SFFS and impliment a few of those features (drop the price a bit as well) and then we'd be rocking...

Cheers,
dz006

Hello

Thank you for your feedback.

-> No FTP support.
Currently VV does not support FTP . We may add FTP support in one of the next updates.

-> Native Scheduler.
We think that it is generally better to rely on the Windows Scheduler engine to schedule tasks to avoid having 2 engines running at the same time and using extra resources. Using the Windows Scheduler it is also more secure.

-> Finally - some form of indication in the system tray to tell me that a sync/copy is performing ...
Try VVLauncher, free download from www.tgrmn.com . VVLauncher is a good tool for this.

hi there,
just wanted to let you know that there's at least one more (actual customer) out there who would like to see the FTP support. When it get's implemented it ought to be with a separate timing option, so that I could set a monitor time specifically for FTP projects, and thus e.g. say check for changes locally or remote (or both) every X milliseconds.

Re. the scheduler I agree with you guys, using Windows build in is "better" than the alternatives.

The Launcher module that you supply for system tray monitoring only seems to all a single "profile" to be run/monitored?

Yes, currently VVLauncher handles one ViceVersa project. In future releases we will expand this to more projects.

I agree. FTP server support is NEEDED ASAP!

I cannot find comparable software anywhere.

The 'mirror' option in ViceVersa would be great to use in conjunction with a FTP server as a target. Files encrypted and uploaded individually and any files existing on the target but deleted off the source, are removed.

An (encrypted?) index file on the FTP of all the file times/sizes stored on the FTP would prevent the files from having to be downloaded and de-crypted to check their size/timestamp against the source files, and minimize bandwidth usage.

Also forgot to add that an option to throttle FTP upload speed is a must to avoid killing connection bandwidth during backups.

I would really like to see FTP, RSYNC or SCP support added. My transfers generally run around 100GB and go between two physical continents. It is hard to get reliable Windows copy transfers.

Multiple file copies going at once would be a good thing, I currently run multiple copies of the software on different branches of my file systems to get more data through faster.

FTP synchronization would also be very cool. We have some transfers that occur overseas and would love to use Vice Versa to do this.

I would like to see FTP support and a decent scheduler. It's easy to create a Windows Service to do your scheduling.

I am in the same position of needing to minimize the bandwidth on things. The smallest transfer footprint the best.

Here is another thing I would like. Since you are using a temp file anyway, how about during a copy, compress the file, copy to the target then decompress it. This would save lots on bandwidth which can cost a good bit.

I have been looking for a tool that can do two-way sync with scp. Vice versa would be my choice if it just supported scp.

I can't map the server file system to windows network drive as my hosting provider does not allow it. It seems to be much more common to be able to establish ssh/scp/sftp etc connection to remote server than being able to see the server file system as windows network drive.

Put another mark down for FTP support. Like others here, I've found that remote backup/storage is so cheap (12GB for <$17/mo with Site5, and unlimited domains on the web service) that a remote backup at a data center is a very interesting option. With a sync support to FTP, I could have local and remote copies.

PS, ignore any price-whining. At $60, the price is definitely good. It's low enough for the dedicated home user, and a refreshing change from the $500 some folks want for "business" licenses.

I think he means Super Flexible File Synchronizer. If you are comparing products you might also want to take a look at 2BrightSparks' SyncBackSE. There are others as well.

I took a quick look at SFFS but decided against it. SyncBackSE has a lot of features but that might not be a plus. I though it was a little complicated by compasrion to VVPro but price is good. All these programs have their pluses and minuses. At the moment I'm sticking with VVPro.
