Filters not working for me

Probably something silly I am doing, but I can't figure it out. I create exclude filters for directories. I do it by browsing to a file, then removing the file name and leaving the drive and directory name. I have tried it with and without the trailing \, with and without *.*, but it still happily copies everything in the "excluded" folders.
I do not have any file filters set, other than size filters. I am using Replicate Update.
What am I missing?

Add the whole folder as exclude filter , ie to exclude c:\test\folderA\ add an exclude subfolder filter c:\test\folderA\ (in ViceVersa PRO 2)

Note, this is a subfolder filter, not a file filter.
