We have a file replication set up on a server in the UK to replicate files between a file server in the UK and another in Australia. This replication has been working well for a long time, but since 3rd November we have been getting error messages such as:

2017-11-03 16:48:56 : Copying file \\syd-fs-001\GIS_Storage\Source_Data\ONSHORE_WIND\External\Australasia\Australia\Terrain\Rasters\dems1sv1_0\z002028.adf <to> \\kl-fs-003\GIS_Storage\Source_Data\ONSHORE_WIND\External\Australasia\Australia\Terrain\Rasters\dems1sv1_0\z002028.adf (1.05GB) [Can not write data. There is a time and/or date difference between the client and server.] [Error] Unable to remove temporary file \\kl-fs-003\GIS_Storage\Source_Data\ONSHORE_WIND\External\Australasia\Australia\Terrain\Rasters\dems1sv1_0\~vv1.tmp [ERROR].

and

2017-11-11 03:04:38 : Copying file \\syd-fs-001\GIS_Storage\Source_Data\ONSHORE_WIND\Internal\Australasia\Australia\Interference\Interference.gdb\timestamps <to> \\kl-fs-003\GIS_Storage\Source_Data\ONSHORE_WIND\Internal\Australasia\Australia\Interference\Interference.gdb\timestamps (400B) [Can not create "\\kl-fs-003\GIS_Storage\Source_Data\ONSHORE_WIND\Internal\Australasia\Australia\Interference\Interference.gdb\timestamps". Folder "\\kl-fs-003\GIS_Storage\" could not be created. There is a time and/or date difference between the client and server.] [ERROR].

I have tried updating ViceVersa PRO to the latest release (build 2519) and updated the profile to ignore up to 2 seconds difference between files, but this has not resolved the issue. I have also checked with our IT department and time syncing is working between the servers in the UK and in Australia.

Can you please advise me what we can do to get this file replication working again?

Regards,
Steve

Hi, this error comes directly from Windows.

There are some possible solutions on the web:
https://www.google.com/search?q=There+is+a+time+and%2For+date+difference+between+the+client+and+server+error+copying+files

Do you get the same error if you try to copy those same files from source to target doing a standard copy with Windows Explorer?

thanks

Thanks for the reply.

I do not get an error of any kind when I copy one of those same files from source to target doing a standard copy with Windows Explorer.

Our IT department have confirmed that the time is synced correctly on all 3 of the servers that are involved (source, target and running servers). Do you have any suggestions?

I have turned on the option "Use Windows Native File Copy" in the profile settings. Some of the files replicate correctly:

2017-11-15 04:34:26 : Copying file \\syd-fs-001\gis_storage\Projects\ONSHORE_WIND\AUS\twc\Rasters\Twin Creek_FME5_M61AUSawdWCF004_20170508\ShearScaling\Directional\ShearScaling_Height93_Dir90.tif <to> \\kl-fs-003\gis_storage\Projects\ONSHORE_WIND\AUS\twc\Rasters\Twin Creek_FME5_M61AUSawdWCF004_20170508\ShearScaling\Directional\ShearScaling_Height93_Dir90.tif (76.63KB) [OK].

...but others fail to replicate with the same error as before:

2017-11-15 04:34:06 : Copying file \\syd-fs-001\gis_storage\Projects\ONSHORE_WIND\AUS\twc\Rasters\Twin Creek_FME5_M61AUSawdWCF004_20170508\ShearScaling\Directional\ShearScaling_Height93_Dir30.tif <to> \\kl-fs-003\gis_storage\Projects\ONSHORE_WIND\AUS\twc\Rasters\Twin Creek_FME5_M61AUSawdWCF004_20170508\ShearScaling\Directional\ShearScaling_Height93_Dir30.tif (76.63KB) [Can not create "\\kl-fs-003\gis_storage\Projects\ONSHORE_WIND\AUS\twc\Rasters\Twin Creek_FME5_M61AUSawdWCF004_20170508\ShearScaling\Directional\ShearScaling_Height93_Dir30.tif". Folder "\\kl-fs-003\gis_storage\" could not be created. There is a time and/or date difference between the client and server.] [ERROR].

I have set up a simple test replication (with just a few small test files) between the same file servers and this runs without any problems.

Do you have any further suggestions?

Hi, to me this issue sounds like an intermittent network issue and I would not be surprised if the error reported by Windows is actually incorrect/misleading... the fact that the same files sometimes do copy and sometimes they do not makes me think it is an intermittent network issue. From what you describe it also sounds it might be related to network load (because smaller jobs are OK).

I am coming to the same conclusion. I'll discuss this with our IT department again. Thanks for your help.
