"Try to copy files that are in use by other applications"

Can you please explain the "advanced locking techniques"?

I'd like to understand why I should "Use this option with caution".

Help file states: "ViceVersa will try to copy a file that is currently in use by another program by using advanced locking techniques. If the program that is currently using the file cannot handle this type of locking mechanism, it may generate errors. Use this option with caution. It is not necessary if you are using Volume Shadow Copies (see below)."

Thanks. Brian

Hi, when this option is enabled in the profile settings, ViceVersa will open part of the file in read-only mode and let other application write to the file that is being copied by ViceVersa if needed. This can case issue in some older programs but generally this option is fine to use.

Also some applications open files in exclusive mode (e.g. no other applications can open the file not even just for reading content) so this option does not always work.

Lastly a file can be changed by another application while ViceVersa is copying the file when this option is enabled which may mean that the target is not an exact copy of the source. The file will then be copied again next time ViceVersa runs.
