We're having the same issue here. Only seems to happen when it tries to archive the files, but all the paths involved use \\?\

Any update on this?

I have always had a problem with long file names. I'm not sure why, because most of the time everything works OK with the //?/ syntax preceding paths. In my logs, there are shorter paths that fail while some of the longer paths succeed. There is also errors about the folder not being empty when VV tries to delete folders in the target after they have been deleted in the source. The doesn't happen for files, just folders.

An unrelated complaint is that there is a distinction between file and folder filters which makes some matching patterns useless unless they're specified in both file and folder filters. Archive filters don't have that problem, they will match files and folders, with no distinction necessary.

One more unrelated thing is that I would like to have more control over what files get archived. Smart archiving is an all-or-nothing feature. It would be nice to be able to specify that anything matching a pattern would be handled with its own separate specification.

I tried with \\?\ ; \\?\UNC\"ip address" for source and/or target, it does not work. It is a horrible waste of time as each modification means scanning again the target which in my case takes 4 hours.

I wrote to tech support, they simply referred me back to these postings in a circular way. Then they stopped replying all together.

It would be great if you can finally find a solution to this problem. It would also be good if you can time-stamp in the log and output files when each execution starts, ends, etc. Thank you.

Hello.
Any progress on long file names. It is 4+ years since this topic was opened. I am on Ver 2.5 Pro 64 bit and still have errors related to links longer than 259 characters. Considering that long filenames are common place in every office I have worked I can see many places where names greatly exceed 259. My software developers do it weekly. Just for point of reference I have a link pasted here.

Thanks.

Hi, are you using the long file name prefix in the ViceVersa profiles? See: http://www.tgrmn.com/web/kb/item31.htm
thanks

For UNC paths use the \\?\UNC\ prefix, e.g.

\\server\share\ becomes \\?\UNC\server\share\

That did not work for me, using VV Pro 2.5 build 2514.

On my single computer (no network issues), I followed the directions in the link above, and for the source "J:\" (including subdirectories in profile), I changed the source to "\\?\J:\"

When I tried to run the profile, I got the error message: "Cannot monitor folder \\?\J:"

Any suggestions would be appreciated for being able to get past the 256 barrier.

Thank you

Is the message "Cannot monitor folder \\?\J:" shown in VVLauncher or VVEngine? Are you using the latest versions / builds? thanks

Thank you for responding so quickly.

Yes, I'm using the latest build VV Pro 2.5 2514.

The error message shows up using VV Launcher, and selecting "Run Now" for a profile where the source "J:\" was changed to "\\?\J:\". Subdirectories are included in the profile. The profile, when set for "J:\", runs without any errors, except for not being able to backup a group of files it cannot copy because of the long file name issue (info from the log).

I'm not using VVEngine. Just VV Pro, Scheduler and Launcher. It does not seem though, on reading about VVEngine, that it would make any difference from VV Scheduler for this issue. Or any need to use it in addition to VV Scheduler for the simple backups I'm using VV Pro for: from one computer to one USB attached backup drive. If that is not correct, let me know.

Thanks again.

I've implemented this as per what the root article and all the posts state and I think it is working. However, the file exclusion filters no longer work.

for example, when I had a filter for
c:\dir\filename

in the profile settings, it now throws an error stating that the file doesn't exist, because the profile now states

\\?\c:\dir\

Any thoughts?
