Hello. To say that I am a novice when it comes to backup software is an understatement. That said, I'll tell you about my network and what I want out of backup software. I would appreciate it if you could tell me if VV can meet my needs.

My network: (1) desktop computer and (1) laptop networked together through a wireless router (the desktop via CAT 5 and the laptop wirelessly); also, I have an external USB hard drive connected to the desktop computer--the laptop has access to the external hard drive through Windows' file sharing feature

What I would like: I would like to sync files between the two computers and to have that information backed up to the external USB hard drive (automatically--at, say, 3:00am each day). Additionally, I would like the backup to be done in the native file format. Furthermore, can I make the files that I sync different from the files that are backed up (ie backup "FILE1", "FILE2" and "FILE3", while syncing only "FILE1" and "FILE2")?

Can VV do this for me? Are there any issues that I should consider or be aware of?

Yes, ViceVersa will meet your needs.

ViceVersa will copy files between two or more folder pairs, called source and target. Folders can be local or over the network. ViceVersa compares source and target and then copy changed/new/deleted files, according to the copy method you selected.

For more info see:
Synchronize Files and Folders: Step by Step
List of File Synchronization, Backup and Replication Methods Supported by ViceVersa

Jobs can be saved in profiles (files with extension .fsf) and then re-opened. Files can be filtered by file type, size, name, etc.

Profiles can be run manually or setup to run automatically.
There are several schedulers available for ViceVersa. See http://www.tgrmn.com/web/vvengine/scheduling.htm for more info.

thanks
